    The verbs ending in -ing, also called gerunds (in English gerunds), may have several roles in the prayer. For example: adding, goingstartingraining.

    Termination -ing of a verb: what does it mean?

    verbs ending in –ingThey can fulfill different roles, such as verbs, nouns, either adjectives, depending on the grammatical context:

    • Verb. verbs ending in -ing accompany the assistant to befor the formation of continuous tenses, such as the present continuous or the past continuous. In Spanish it is equivalent to the endings -ando or -endo (walking, eating). For example: I was having a shower when the telephone rang./ I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
    • Noun. verbs ending in -ingThey can be nouns and fulfill the function of subject or

      object of the sentence. In Spanish they are translated as infinitives (when they function as nouns, for example: trabajar, leer).
      • Subject. When the -ing It appears at the beginning of a sentence, fulfills the role of subject, which indicates an activity. For example: Diving is great fun./ Diving is a lot of fun.
      • Object. When the -ing appears after a main verb, fulfills the role of object of the sentence. For example: He loves playing tennis./ He loves to play tennis.
    • Adjective. verbs ending in -ingThey can be adjectives that derive from a verb. They indicate a permanent characteristic of a person or object, and accompany the verb to be(be). For example: what an interesting story!/ What an interesting story!
    • Complement. verbs ending in -ing They are the complement of the sentence when they appear after a preposition(on, in, for). All prepositions in English (except toin some contexts) should be followed by -ing. For example: The girl is good at writing poetry. / The girl is good at writing poetry.

    What verbs are followed by -ing?

    There are numerous main verbs that need a secondary verb ending in -ing(gerund) to complete its meaning. The verb ending in -ingacts as an object or complement, without which the sentence would not make sense. For example: I love playing cards./ I love playing cards.

    verbs ending in -ing they are not verbs by themselves. They are invariable (they do not change), since they are not conjugated nor do they express time. It is the main verb that must be conjugated in the corresponding tense, not the gerund. For example: I don't mind going there.(present).I didn't mind going there. (past).

    Some frequent verbs that must be followed by a gerund (-ing) are:

    finish finish The boy finished eating his meal and left.

    imagine imagine I imagine myself working for your company in the future.
    keep follow, maintain She keeps on thinking about him.

    There are certain physical activities and sports that are expressed using the verb go + -ing:

    There are verbs that admit both a gerund and a to + infinitive as a complement, with or without a difference in meaning: like, love, prefer, hate, can't stand, bother, begin, start, continue.

    Certain verbs change meaning depending on whether they are followed by -ingor of to + infinitive: remember, stop, try.For example: I remember calling Anne.(I remember calling her). / remembered to call Anne.(Do not forget me).

    to take into account: The negative form of verbs ending in -ingis not + -ing. For example:I hate not having time to relax.
