    There are two different uses of the words doand does in English. Do and does can be auxiliaries (Do you like soccer? Does she likes pop music?) or main verbs (Yo do my homework every day. she she does her homework every day.), depending on the grammatical context.

    Docorresponds to the pronounsI, you, we, they (both as auxiliary and main verb).

    Doescorresponds to the pronouns he, she, it (both as auxiliary and main verb).

    Do and does as auxiliaries

    Do and does are auxiliary verbs that are used to formulate questions and negative sentences, in the present tense (present simple) next to the infinitive of the main verb. They also serve to express emphasis and avoid repetition of verb.

    • Do is the auxiliary for pronouns I, you, we, they.
    • Does is the assistant forhe, she, it.

    Do and does (as auxiliaries) have no equivalent or translation into Spanish.

    Do and does as helpers in questions

    To ask questions in the simple present, the auxiliaries are used. do and does, with the following structure:

    For example: Do they live together? Does she come to argentina often?

    • If a yes or no answer is required, the question begins with do / does. For example: Do do you speak English?/ Speak English?
    • If information is required as a response, add what, which, where, when, whoandhow before do / does. For example: where do you live?/ Where do you live?

    Exception: He verb to be does not carry do / does to ask questions. For example: Are you American?

    Do and does as auxiliaries in negative sentences

    To formulate negative sentences in the simple present, the auxiliaries are used doand doesfollowed by not: do not (no) either does not (doesn't)as appropriate:

    Exception: The verb to be does not carry do / does to make negative sentences. For example: I'm not American.

    Do and does as auxiliaries to avoid repetition

    the auxiliaries doanddoes they are used at the end of a short answer to avoid repetition of the verb. For example: Do you like television? Yes, I do.

    The structures used to avoid repetition are:

    Affirmative answer Negative answer
    Yes, I / you / we / they do. No, I/you/we/they no.
    Yes, he/she/it does. No, he/she/it doesn't.

    the auxiliaries do and does they avoid the repetition of the verb in sentences when two ideas are opposed. For example: I love sushi, but my sister doesn't. / I like sushi but my sister doesn't.

    No as auxiliary of the negative imperative

    The Auxiliar no It is used to form the negative of the imperative. For example: No speak./ Do not speak.

    The Auxiliar do It is not used in the imperative, except when you want to emphasize the meaning of the verb. For example:Do eat with me/ Come with me.

    Do and does as auxiliaries to express emphasis

    Do anddoesThey can appear in affirmative sentences to give emphasis to the main verb. Prayer gains more strength. For example: Yo do love music! / She does enjoy trips.

    Do and does as main verbs

    Doanddoesas main verbs they mean “to do”. They are the conjugations in present simple of the main verb do.

    Do corresponds to the pronounsI, you, we, they, and does corresponds to the pronouns he, she, it. For example:

    • The students do their homework every day./ The students do your homework every day.
    • Mary does Maths exercises every week. /Mary does math exercises every week.
    • The only thing we can do now is waiting./ The only thing we can do now is to wait.

    Careful:In negative and interrogative sentences where the main verb is used do(to do) do not confuse the main verb with the auxiliary (do / does) which also appears. For example:

    • Do (auxiliary) you do (main verb) your homework every day?
    • Yo no (assistant) do main verb) my homework every day.

    Examples of no and doesn't as auxiliaries in denials
