The hemerographic records are those that are used to classify, order and categorize the information of an article of a periodical publication and that are used by researchers who want to have easy access and a system to remember the materials they are reading and studying.

The word “hemerography” is a neologism with various Greek roots, such as hemerology, which means the art of making calendars, and newspaper library, which refers to the place where newspapers and magazines are kept.

    Elements of a hemerographic record

    • Author. The name of the person who wrote the text is recorded. If there is no personal signature of the author, it is understood that it is an editorial article and represents the position of the communication medium. The author's last name must be in capital letters and the author's name is preceded by a comma.
    • Article title. The name of the article is entered exactly as it appears in the publication. It must be between quotes.
    • instagram story viewer
    • Name of the magazine or newspaper. The media outlet in which the article was published is recorded. Other aspects must also be taken into account: if the article was translated from another international medium or if it was previously published elsewhere. It must be in italics or, if it is a handwritten record, underlined.
    • Publication date. The day, month and year in which the article appeared are recorded. This gives context to the state of the world at the time and the relevance of the content of the article.
    • publication number. The publication series is recorded, if it is a journal.
    • The city and country in which it was printed. The place of publication is recorded. With digital publications and the mass of the public, it is less usual to record this data. But it can be essential if only physical copies are available and this can give the consultant a clue to the text.
    • Other key facts. Depending on the information available, especially in digital fields, other relevant data can be added, such as the web address where the article can be consulted, if it is a special edition, the number of pages of the text, keywords, among others.

    Types of hemerographic record

Hemerographic records can record the following types of data:

    • Magazine article. They are used to refer to only one article in a periodical journal.
    • full magazine. They are used to record the data of an edition of a magazine in a complete way, very useful for cases in which the entire magazine is about the same topic.
    • journal article. They are used to record the information for a single journal entry.

    • yearbook article. They are used to review a specific article in a yearbook, which, as its name indicates, is published every year, although they can also have a different frequency, either monthly or quarterly.
    • complete yearbook. They are used to record the information of the entire yearbook, in general the yearbooks are institutional publications that always work on recurring themes or from the same field of knowledge.
