Expository Text on Water Care

Taking care of water is simpler than it seems

Our blue planet is 71% covered by water, but of this amount only 2.5 to 2.75% is fresh water, suitable for human consumption, which makes it a limited resource. For this reason, numerous campaigns and organizations continually promote the rational use of water, that is, the protection of its available reserves.

But what does it mean to take care of water?

Caring for water means using the available drinking water rationally, that is, not wasting it and valuing it as the scarce resource that it is. It is estimated that in each toilet flush we invest 20 liters of water at a time and in each short shower around 80 liters at a time, while a pipe with a leak wastes a minimum of 46 liters diaries. This means that in our daily lives we use immense amounts of drinking water, although this may seem small compared to the 70% of the world's fresh water that is used for agricultural purposes.

There are numerous international agreements for the defense of water, since humanity has been aware of the value of water for a long time. Organizations and institutions like the

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes are just some of them. World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 of each year to make their struggle visible and make the population aware of our water needs.

Caring for water is not only a matter of State policies, but also concerns us all. Each one can, from their daily life, control the use they give to water and verify that they are not contributing to the decrease in the availability of water per person, in a world in which 40% of the population has insufficient water for personal hygiene.

How can we take care of water?

Some recommendations to take care of the water:

• Check the pipes in our homes and make sure that none of them lose water or have leaks.
• Rationalize water consumption time for hygiene: take short showers, do not leave the tap running while we brush our teeth or wash the dishes.
• Wash our car with a bucket instead of a hose to reduce water waste.
• Water the plants in the morning or at night, to avoid rapid evaporation of the water, and place a saucer under each pot to contain excess water.
• Fill the capacity of instruments such as washing machines or dishwashers to the maximum, to reduce the number of times they are used daily.
• Buy low water consumption appliances.
• Do not throw chemical waste, cooking oil, turpentine and other highly polluting substances down the drain, but give them the appropriate destination so that they do not end up in rivers and lakes.
• Use recycled water instead of drinking water for irrigation and other activities that do not involve human consumption.
• Report drinking water losses to the authorities and demand their prompt resolution. Similarly, denounce initiatives that pollute water and soil.
• Educate ourselves and inform ourselves regarding the preservation of water, and become aware of the importance of water in the short, medium and long term.
