    Types of Reading (with examples)

    The reading is the process through which people perceive and understand texts writing, using sight or hearing, to narratives oral or audiobooks, and touch, applying the Braille technique.

    It is a cognitive ability that the human being has acquired throughout the evolutionary process, and that provides important benefits for intellectual development and to prevent decline cognitive.

    Types of reading

    There are many and varied ways of reading. They differ, among other factors, by the skills that are put into play and the objectives pursued in each case.

    1. oral reading. It is the one in which what is read is pronounced aloud, which implies certain limitations in the reading speed, given by the pronunciation and intonation that require respecting pauses and silences.
    2. silent reading. It is the one in which the process of understanding and decoding is carried out internally, without vocalizing or making any sound.
    3. reflective reading. It is one in which the reading process occurs slowly, to allow a real and complete understanding of each part of the text.

    5. selective reading. It is the reading in which, having the complete text, the reader chooses to skip fragments and choose at will the ones he wants to read.
    6. model reading. It is the reading that occurs in the school environment and implies that a person, usually a teacher, reads aloud a text to offer a guide to students who must follow the reading individually and silently, while they listen.
    7. deep reading. It is the reading that is done at higher or university levels and that consists of detailed reading to understand technical concepts of a particular discipline.
    8. Fast reading. It is the first step in approaching texts for study and consists of making a general reading, type scanning, at the highest possible speed, to detect general aspects and then give way to reading intensive.
    9. comprehensive reading. It is one in which the text is read in its entirety, from beginning to end, without omitting or skipping fragments.
    10. intensive reading. It is typical —although not exclusive— of the academic field, and consists of a careful and deep reading of a text to fully understand all its meaning. Many times it requires more than one reading of the entire text or of the most complex fragments.
    11. involuntary reading. It is the most frequent and consists of reading without really having the intention of doing so. Something that happens with advertising, billboards on the streets, among others.
    12. medium reading. It is the one in which the complete text is read, but without going deeper, and the fundamental concepts are retained. Unlike speed reading, in this case there is no intention to do it quickly.
    13. extensive reading. It is the one in which one reads for pleasure and not to fulfill an academic activity or because of the need to acquire some specific knowledge.
    14. dramatized reading. It is one in which several people intervene, fulfilling the role of different characters and providing an appropriate intonation to what is read. In this sense it is similar to a play, although the participants are not required to memorize the sayings.
    15. Annotated reading. It is the one that is done individually and silently or out loud and shared, but whose objective is to arouse the concern of the students so that they participate after a debate oral in which they question the different problems addressed by the text.
    16. creative reading. Typical of the school or academic environment, it is one that is carried out to then elaborate a written reflection that explains, values ​​or offers the student's point of view on the text read.
    17. reading with comment. It is the one in which literary or philosophical texts are addressed, and whose purpose is to make a reflective comment that analyzes the text read in depth.
    18. familiarization reading. It is the one in which a text is read superficially, to get a general idea of ​​the topics it deals with and the ideological approach, but without going into details. Generally, it is requested by the teacher before starting a class, so that the students have an idea of ​​what is going to be discussed.
    19. sequential read. It is one in which a text is read from beginning to end, but in an orderly manner, addressing each section of the text in depth.
    20. mechanical reading. It is the one that is done as the first step in learning to read. It consists of attributing the appropriate sound to each symbol and advancing in the interpretation of the words.
    21. receptive reading. It is one in which the reader identifies and retains the most relevant concepts while advancing in the Comprehensive reading of the text, so that, at the end, you can relate them and synthesize the meaning of the text. written.
    22. verbatim reading. It is that superficial reading in which the reader does not investigate the information that emerges from the text, beyond the message that he expresses literally.
    23. inferential reading. It is one in which the reader seeks to unravel the hidden meanings, which are implicit in the text and that must be inferred from the tone, the vocabulary, among other resources applied in its elaboration.
    24. critical reading. It is a particular type of inferential reading in which the reader makes a subjective analysis of the text as he reads it, and performs an evaluative analysis based on it, considering the way it was written, the procedures it uses, etc.
    25. pictographic reading. It is one in which the reader observes and decodes pictograms instead of words. Icons are read that figuratively represent an object or a meaning, such as traffic signs.
    26. braille reading. It is one in which the perception of stimuli does not occur through sight, but through touch. This reading mode is mainly used by the blind population.
    27. phonetic reading. Typical of the school environment, it is one in which it is sought to identify the sounds corresponding to each letter and correct pronunciation errors, if any.
    28. music reading. It is one in which the reader decodes and interprets a score. That is, he reproduces in his mind the sounds, melodies and rhythms that are symbolically represented on the staff.
    29. informative reading. It is one that is motivated by the search for specific data to achieve a specific purpose. (for example, understanding how to operate an appliance, writing a practical work school).
    30. scientific reading. It is the one in which technical material related to the branches of science is investigated. In this case, the reader will address specific texts that require more or less high prior knowledge in the area of ​​interest.
