    Types of adjectives

    The adjectives are words that offer some information about a noun. From the syntactic point of view, its main function is that of attributes or direct modifiers of a name. Morphologically, they agree on gender and number with the noun they modify. For instance: immense sea, first class coats yours.

    In literature the focus is on descriptive adjectives that characterize with greater precision or those that have a particular sound that helps to enhance the intentionality of what is stated.

    Also, the location of the qualifying adjective Regarding the noun that it modifies, it may have an influence on its meaning. When it is prepended, the quality stands out, although in some cases that position can change the meaning (for example: old friends friends old).

    Classification of adjectives

    From the point of view semantic (that is, of the meaning) adjectives are classified into two large groups: connotative and non-connotative adjectives.

    Connotative adjectives. They are those that provide information, have content and point out some particularity of the noun they accompany. They may be:

      • Ordinal adjectives. For instance: first, third, fifth, twelfth, fiftieth.
      • Cardinal adjectives. For instance: five, seven, thirty, twenty-eight, thirty-nine.
      • Partitive adjectives. For instance: half, one quarter, two thirds.
      • Multiple or proportional adjectives. For instance: double, triple, quadruple.
      • Distributive adjectives. For instance: each,both.

    Non-connotative adjectives. They are those that do not express any characteristic and do not have their own meaning. They may be:

      • Single possessor adjectives. Singular: mine, yours, his, mine, yours, his; my Your his (before the noun). Plural: mine, yours, his, mine, yours, his; my, your, their(before the noun).
      • Adjectives of various possessors. Singular: ours, yours, his, our, yours, his.
        Plural: ours, yours, his, ours, yours, his.
      • Country adjectives. For instance: Argentine, French, Italian, Portuguese.
      • Region or province adjectives. For instance: Piedmontese, Provençal, Breton.
      • City adjectives. For instance: Londoner, Roman, Parisian, Florentine.

    Degrees of significance of the adjective

    Adjectives can be used in three degrees of meaning:

      • Superiority. Twist is applied more than. For instance: This cake is plus tasty that the other.
      • Of equality. Twist is applied As. For instance: This cake is so tasty What the other.
      • Of inferiority. Twist is applied less than. For instance: This cake is less tasty that the other.
      • Absolute
        • The ending is added -very. For instance: sweetvery, bellvery, sadvery.
        • The adverb is prepended very. For instance: very sweet, very beautiful, very sad.
        • Other words are preceded. For instance: andextremely sweet, extremely beautiful, immensely sad.
      • Relative. The expressions are used the more, the less. For instance: This river is the more width of the world.

    Some considerations to keep in mind:

    • Some adjectives have their own superlative. For instance: good / optimal, bad / lousy, large / maximum, small / minimum, high / supreme, low / negligible.
    • Some adjectives form proper comparatives of superiority. For instance: big / bigger, small / smaller, high / top, low / bottom, good / better, bad / worse.
    • Some absolute superlatives are formed with the ending -errimo. For instance: staunch, famous, very free, very poor, very poor, salubrious.
    • Some absolute superlatives are formed by considering the Latin origin of the words. For instance: Very old, very beautiful, very accurate, new, very wise, very crude, very faithful, very rude, very tender.
