    Quantifying Adjectives In English

    English   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

An adjective is a word that is used to modify a noun or another word, describing it, limiting it or qualifying it. Quantifying adjectives modify the noun by indicating its quantity.

There are several types of quantifying adjectives:

Numeral adjectives. Numeral adjectives are those that express the specific number of individuals or objects that we are talking about. There are three types of numeral adjectives: cardinal, ordinal, and fractional.

The cardinal numerals are the adjectives that indicate the amount. One, two, fourteen. They modify the noun indicating how many individuals or objects we are talking about:

    One car on the Street.

    Three sad tigers.

    Fourteen years old.

Ordinal numerals They are also quantifying adjectives that help us to indicate the place that a noun occupies in a numerical sequence:

    First place.

    Twelfth Boy Scouts Meeting.

    Fiftieth Anniversary.

Fractional numerals We use them as quantifying adjectives when we speak of a part or fraction of a noun:

    Half an hour.

    A quarter of cheese.

    Two fifths of mile.

Quantifiers. The quantifiers are words that indicate a quantity in generic form, that is, it does not speak of an exact number, but they are expressions such as some, all, none, a few. These words function as adjectives or indefinite pronouns. When they function as adjectives, they always modify a noun. Some of these quantifiers work with countable nouns and others with uncountable nouns. You can see a more extensive explanation here. Some of the most used quantifiers are:

    all (all, all)

    nothing

    none (none)

    every (all, every)

    everything

    everyone

    someone

    something

    any (some, no)

    anyone

    anything (something, nothing)

    much (much)

    many (much, many)

    a lot of (many)

    Few (little)

    little (little, little)

Example of English text with quantifying adjectives:

I went to a park on Sunday. It was noon and it was sunny day. There was a lot of kids. Some of them went with their mother, a few with their father and others with both parents. Three kids was playing with their dog and a fresbee. It was a little dog. In other place, a group of five girls was playing with their dolls. One of the dolls was a porcelain doll. Other children was playing basketball. Five kids against five girls. One of their mothers was trying to be referee, it was so funny! Anyone expected it, but suddenly becomes to rain. All people ran to cover. Someone forgot a ball and was running under the rain. Half an hour later, the rain stops and I came home.
