    Example of Gentile In English

    English   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

Gentilices in English are a type of adjective that we use to talk about the place of origin or residence of a person, group or object. They can refer to a population, state, country, geographic region, or continent.

In English they are called gentilic adjectives, nationality or denonym.

Generally the names are accompanied by the noun they accompany:

I love Russian wristwatches (I like Russian watches. Here the name "Russian" is an adjective that modifies watches: "wristwatches")

On other occasions they are used as a complement to a predicate that describes the subject, also functioning as an adjective:

Many of my friend are French (Many of my friends are French. Here "French" also fulfills a descriptive function, as a complement to the predicate)

They can also act by themselves as a noun:

The British are interesting people (The British are interesting people. In this case, “British, British, works as a noun)

As for their spelling, the gentilics in English are always written with a capital initial.

In addition, the names in English do not have a distinction between masculine and feminine.

Most names are formed by adding –an or –ian to the name of the country or region. However, this does not happen in all cases, so you always have to be attentive to their forms.
