    Example of Numbers in English

    English   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

We use the numbers in English to express quantities and to indicate an order. The numbers that help us to count and express quantities such as three days, eleven years, thirteen cars... are called cardinal numbers. The numbers we use to express the place that something occupies in an order or sequence, such as First Prize, Fifth Place, 20th Anniversary, are called ordinal numbers. Also, the numbers that we use to express a fraction of a whole number, such as a half, a third, a quarter, are called fractional numbers.

    Cardinal numbers in English:

the numbers in English, which we use to express quantities, to count and do mathematics, for their writing and pronunciation, are the cardinal numbers. to write and pronounce them the following rules are followed:

The numbers from one to twelve are as follows:

    1 - One - one

    2 - Two - two

    3 - Three - three

    4 - four - four

    5 - five - five

    6 - Six - six

    7 - Seven - Seven

    8 - Eight - Eight

    9 - Nine - nine

    10 - Ten - ten

    11 - Eleven - Eleven

    12 - Twelve - twelve

The numbers from thirteen to nineteen are written adding after the number of units, the ending -teen, forming a single word:

    13 - Thirteen - thirteen

    14 - Fourteen - Fourteen

    15 - Fifthteen - fifteen

    16 - Sixteen - Sixteen

    17 - Seventeen - Seventeen

    18 - Eighteen - eighteen

    19 - Nineteen - Nineteen

From the number twenty to 99, cardinal numbers in English are written with a number indicating the tens, ending in –ty, followed by the name of the units. Although it is valid to write them separately, it is customary to put an intermediate hyphen to make it clear that it is a single number:

    20 - Twenty - Twenty

    30 - Thirty - thirty

    40 - Forty - Forty

    50 - Fifty - Fifty

    60 - Sixty - sixty

    70 - Seventy - Seventy

    80 - Eighty - Eighty

    90 - Ninety - Ninety

    29 - Twenty-nine - Twenty-nine

    33 - Thirty-three - thirty-three

    48 - Forty-eight - Forty-eight

    82 - Eighty-two - Eighty-two

    77 - Seventy-seven - Seventy-seven

From the hundreds, thousands and millions, the amount of each of them is written first, followed by the word hundred, for the hundreds, thousand for the thousands and million for the millions. These three types of quantities are written in a row, separated by commas, and quantities less than one hundred are preceded by the conjunction and:

    100 - One hundred - one hundred

    200 - Two hundred - two hundred

    500 - Five hundred - five hundred

    900 - Nine hundred - nine hundred

101 - One hundred and one - One hundred and one

    333 - Three hundred and thirty-three - three hundred and thirty-three

    572 - Five hundred and seventy-two - five hundred seventy-two

    1,000 - One thousand - one thousand

    3,000 - Three thousand - three thousand

    7,000 - Seven thousand - Seven thousand

    8,000 - Eight thousand - eight thousand

    13,000 - Thirteen thousand - thirteen thousand

    29,000 - Twenty-nine thousand - twenty-nine thousand

200,000 - Two hundred thousand - two hundred thousand

333,333 - three hundred and thirty three thousand, three hundred and thirty three - three hundred thirty-three thousand three hundred thirty-three

995,871 - nine hundred and ninety-five thousand, eight hundred and seventy one - nine hundred ninety-five thousand eight hundred seventy-one

    1,000,000 - one million - one million

    2,000,000 - two million - two million

    99,000,000 - ninety-nine million - ninety-nine million

100,000,000 - one hundred million - one hundred million

200,000,000 - two hundred million - two hundred million

333,333,333 - three hundred and thirty-three million, three hundred and thirty-three thousand, three hundred and thirty three - three hundred thirty-three million, three hundred thirty-three thousand, three hundred thirty-three three.

Here you have to be very careful, since in the numbers in EnglishUnlike Spanish, there is no expression thousand million (thousand million), instead billion is used, which in Spanish is equivalent to one million million), and the million million is called trillion (trillion), which often causes confusion:

    2,000,000,000 - two billion - two billion

1,350,200,000 - one trillion, three hundred and fifty million, two hundred thousand - one thousand three hundred fifty million, two hundred thousand (literally translated is one trillion, three hundred fifty million Two hundred thousand).

    3,000,000,000,000 - three trillion - three trillion

3,333,333,333,333 - three trillion, three hundred and thirty-three billion, three hundred and thirty tree million, three hundred and thirty tree thousand, three hundred and thirty three - (literally says three trillion, three hundred thirty-three trillion, three hundred thirty-three million, three hundred thirty-three thousand three hundred thirty- three; but the amount expressed in Spanish is :) three billion, three hundred thirty-three billion, three hundred thirty-three thousand three hundred thirty-three

    Ordinal numbers in English:

The numbers in English that allow us to indicate the position of a fact or object in an order or succession, that is, the place they occupy or the order in which they occur, are ordinal numbers. With the exception of the first, second, and third ordinals, all other ordinals are formed by adding the ending -th to the cardinal number form:

    First - first

    Second - second

    Third - third

    Fourth - fourth

    Fifth - fifth

    Sixth - sixth

    Seventh - seventh

    Eight - eighth

    Ninth - ninth

    Tenth - tenth

    Eleventh - eleventh

    Twelfth - twelfth

    Fifteenth - Fifteenth

    Seventeenth - seventeenth

    Twentieth - Twentieth

    Twenty-fifth - twenty-fifth

    Thirty-first - thirty-first

    Forty-second - Forty-second

    Fiftieth - fiftieth

    Sixty-third - sixty-third

    Seventy-fourth - seventy-fourth

    Hundredth - hundredth

    Fractional numbers in English:

The numbers in English that we use to express a fraction or the parts that we take of a whole divided into equal parts, are the fractional numbers. To express them, we use both cardinal and ordinal numbers. The numerator of the fraction will be a cardinal number, which will indicate how many parts we are considering, while the denominator will be an ordinal number that indicates how many parts the Unit. The only exceptions are half and quarters:

    1/2 - one half, a half - one half

    1/3 - a third - a third
