    Words with the suffix -archy

    The suffix -archy comes from the word arche, of Greek origin, and means "order" or "government." So build words that describe ways to organize states or groups. For instance: monarch, autarch, jerarch.

    The suffixes they are morphemes, that is, small units that are added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

    Examples of words with the suffix -archy

    1. Anarchy: Absence of government or effective power.
    2. Autarchy: That is self-sufficient, without depending on outsiders.
    3. Diarchy: Form of government with two sovereigns in power.
    4. Heptarchy: Government of seven sovereigns simultaneously.

    (!) Exceptions

    Not all words ending with -archy correspond to this suffix. These are some exceptions:

    • Boat: In Cantabria, small rowing boat.
    • Jarquia: Disused term that refers to a territory close to a large city, which depends on it.
    • Melarchy: Disused term that means melancholy.
    • Menarche: Presence of the first menstruation.
    • Tarquia: Fleece coin, minted in times of Felipe II in Spain.
